Free XML Sitemap Auditor
Check sitemap XML before trusting the URL list. Find malformed structure, duplicate locations, invalid dates and URLs that deserve review, with sitemap indexes and namespace extensions handled deliberately.
Audit sitemap XML
Processed in your browserExample data is loaded. These are fictional demonstration inputs, not a DigiMSM or client performance result. Use Clear to start your own analysis; editing example values keeps the run labelled as an example.
The interactive tool requires JavaScript. If the form does not appear, check that your WordPress setup allows this fragment’s inline script. The methods and FAQs below remain readable.

A practical workflow
From input to a useful next step.
Use the XML response
Paste or upload a URL sitemap or sitemap index. The file must use the sitemap namespace and fit within the browser tool’s 2 MiB input limit.
Inspect entry-level findings
Review invalid locations, repeated URLs, malformed dates and other flagged metadata. The report distinguishes required structure from optional fields.
Continue with a live crawl
Export the findings, correct confirmed file issues and check the listed pages separately for status, canonical and indexing conditions. Audit each child file when starting from an index.
Know what you are measuring
The method behind the result.
Audit sitemap XML structure, duplicate locations and selected URL metadata. The scope and limitations below help you interpret the output and decide what to verify next.
XML structure comes first
The parser rejects malformed XML and custom entity declarations. It inspects direct sitemap entries in the correct namespace, so an image location is not accidentally counted as a canonical page URL.
Avoid arbitrary sitemap scores
Missing optional dates, query parameters and mixed trailing-slash patterns are not automatically errors. The report gives specific findings rather than a weighted health percentage based on stylistic preferences.
Listing a URL does not verify it
A valid sitemap can still contain redirected, excluded or outdated pages. This local file review cannot fetch those pages or decide what a search engine has indexed. Use it as one part of a technical audit.
Clear answers
Before you act on the result.
Understand the inputs, what the output can establish and how to use it in a broader audit.
Does the sitemap auditor check live HTTP statuses?
No. It audits the XML you provide. It does not request every listed URL, inspect robots meta tags or verify canonical targets and indexing status.
Are sitemap indexes supported?
Yes. An index is recognized and its child sitemap locations are reviewed structurally. The child files are not fetched; open and audit them separately.
Why are image sitemap URLs not counted as page URLs?
The tool reads the direct loc element in each sitemap entry’s namespace. Locations inside image or other extension elements describe different resources and are not treated as canonical page entries.
Is a missing lastmod date an error?
No. It is optional. When you provide a date, it should be correctly formatted and accurately describe the page’s modification, rather than the time the sitemap happened to be generated.
What are the size limits?
The protocol permits up to 50,000 entries and 50 MiB uncompressed. This browser tool accepts up to 2 MiB per run to keep processing manageable; use smaller audit files for larger exports.
Does a valid sitemap guarantee indexing?
No. The file supplies a list of resources. Page accessibility, content, canonical decisions and search-engine processing require separate checks. This tool does not claim to submit or index your URLs.
